We are Tulip and Daffodil, a bonded pair of 2 year old sisters! We have had quite the journey, but you wouldn't even know it just by looking at us now!
Back in March of 2023, we were found roaming around in a field on the side of the road up in San Bernardino County, California. The woman who found us took us to the nearby animal shelter which was unfortunately crowded with so many other cats, and it looked like we weren't going to make it out of there alive.
Daffy was turned in as a pregnant kitty and gave birth the very next day, but lost all 5 of her babies, who were premature. We had been red-listed for euthanasia due to the lack of space. Time was of the essence, and we had only a number of hours. We were rescued by a volunteer from "Animal Rescuers without Borders" or ARWOB for short, after she read about our plight. She drove all the way up from San Diego to rescue us. Our new foster mom named us Daffy (short for Daffodil), and Tully (short for Tulip) because she said we had the most "flowery personalities" and were just so friendly. She made room in her home for us and we shared a room together since we got along so well.
We do not know if we are actually blood siblings, but certainly enjoy each other’s company and act like the best of friends. We were supposedly born in October 2021, which means we were about 2 years old when we were found.
We were taken to the safety of our new foster home the first week of March, but we were sick from the nasty shelter germs which made us sick with an upper respiratory infection, as well as being stressed and sad in the shelter. Thankfully, our foster mom cared for us, giving us daily medication and helped us get our appetites back. She also showered us with love! Once we started to feel better and realized we were safe and loved, our true personalities began to shine through!
It was quite a few months that we were at our foster Mom's home. She had made space for us in a room just for us, but she had quite a few other fosters to attend to, and we started to get bored! It was not ideal but we knew as long as we had each other, everything would be okay.
Tulip began to get more and more antsy, and her best coping strategy was to self soothe through grooming. She licked and licked and licked and licked and got herself into a little problem with bald patches and hot spots. After a food elimination diet, we realized she was suffering from "psychogenic alopecia" which is a somewhat uncommonly self induced condition from stress. Tulip was essentially going insane from not being able to cuddle and roam free like she used to!
In August of 2023, after months of waiting, we were spotted online by our new Mom, Michelle, who was looking for us for quite some time, searching everywhere she could for a bonded pair of tuxedo sisters, about 1-3 years old. What a match we were! She watched videos of us online and just knew we were the cats for her and her family. Upon our first meeting, Tulip jumped right onto her lap to snuggle, and Michelle knew she could fix us right up with the healing power of love. She brought us home to meet the family, our 5 year old little human brother, and our strong papa with a scratchy beard, and all their friends and extended family.
Christmas 2023 was spent looking and playing with our first ever Christmas tree, and sitting in the laps of everyone we met. We are so happy and lucky to be together, safe and well fed.
Hi I'm Tulip! I have short hair with white and brown tabby coloring, and a little black beauty spot on my right nostril and black eyeliner around my bright yellow green eyes. The highlight of my day is making buscuits on a squishy lap, and of course licking my sister Daffodil until she falls asleep. I guess you can say I’m a “people kitty” because I enjoy my humans and love to tell them so.
When I arrived at my new family's home, I weight 10 lbs, and had a patch of hair missing on my back from when I just couldn't stop licking my fur. You see, being in cages and then locked in a room made me miss roaming around outside very bad. I am a very smart kitty, and I knew things weren't right, my mind needed socializing and stimulation and freedom, and I became more and more anxious, afraid I would never find a home. I found a way to soothe myself, because I wouldn't dare ever bite or scratch a human! To make the days go by faster, I resorted to licking and licking and licking.... and that's how I got the bald spot.
My new Mom Michelle changed our diet thinking it might be an allergy, and we got to eat fresh meat for the first time in who knows how long! I quickly lost the weight and slimmed down. I went from barely able to play to bouncing around the house with ease! But I just kept licking.
I wasn't sure at first if we were really going to stay in this new home, I was still a little nervous apparently because I kept licking for months. I pulled off all those silly cones too, they couldn't stop me! So my new Mom decided to help me stop licking by giving me lots of fancy fuzzy sweaters and jackets to wear which held me tight, they felt like a big hug! I wore these clothes for months, until I began to feel like this was a safe space. After spending Christmas with my new family, surrounded by love and laughter, I finally felt like I belonged here. And I stopped my licking! Now I run free nakey and can stretch and play and make all the zoomies I want! What a wonderful feeling it is to be free!
I love to eat fresh meat which my Mom makes for me. I love to play but mainly I love to cuddle, and as long as I get my cuddles for the day, I feel at peace and don't have any need to lick! I love watching the birdies out the window, and chasing my sister around the house. I love to sneak into my human brother's bed while he's asleep and snuggle up next to him. I love my automatic litter box and automatic feeders, and I love my toys! I love laying in the sun, and I'm so happy to have the best life now!
Hi I'm Daffodil! I have long silky fur with black and white "Tuxedo" coloring, and bright yellow eyes. The highlight of my day is hunting mice toys and playing with anything long and stringy. I absolutely love to play! I'm not as cuddly as my sister Tulip when I first meet you, but where I lack in cuddles, I make up for in fun entertainment for all.
When I arrived at my new family's home, I was also a little chunky, because boy do I LOVE to eat. I spend most of my days trying to take food out of the fridge, sink, and even people's mouths! I still weigh more than my sister, but I've slimmed down a lot and my beautiful silky fur has come in nicely. I'm definitely getting fluffier, which is exciting!
My favorite part about my new life is probably all the toys and places to nap. I have lots of beds, and lots of toys to chase and play with. Sometimes, when I feel like I'm not getting enough play time, I will walk around the house and moan as if I'm dying, with a toy in my mouth so everyone knows what needs to happen. I get my way most of the time.
I've managed to scavenge several pieces of meat that My mom left defrosting on the counter, she knows now, that anything left on the counter is mine to nibble on. Bread is my second favorite, believe it or not.
I'm not sure if I will every recover from the grief of losing my babies, I think maybe that's why I'm not as cuddly as Tulip, but I am very curious about the world around me, and I follow my Mom every where. I like to watch her cook and take care of her baby, I even like to watch her take a shower and get ready in the bathroom, she's just so intriguing. Any time I hear a baby outside I run to the window to watch them. I think I've handled everything quite well and I'm very proud of myself for making it this far. I've already felt comfortable enough to sleep with my mom on her lap at night, I believe she really loves me and will keep me safe.
